Cheat Sheet: How To Love Your Bed Linen Right

Posted by The Canningvale Team on 4th Jan 2024

There’s nothing better than slipping in between freshly laundered sheets. But how many of us are actually doing it right? Washing your sheets regularly not only feels great (and is more hygienic), but if you do it right, you can also extend the life of your bedding and save yourself some dollars along the way.

We got together with our bedding experts to come up with this handy cheat sheet to ensure you have a long and fulfilling relationship with your new bed linen…

1. Wash before use

Before you get too excited about decking out your bed with your fresh new linens, we always recommend giving them a wash first. To make them extra soft, our tip is to wash them with a cup of bicarb soda, a cup of vinegar and half the amount of your usual detergent. Make sure that you wash your sheets separately (don’t wash with clothes or towels) and allow the sheets to move freely.

2. Be cool

Wash your sheets (including Bamboo and Vintage Softwash) on the normal cycle with cold or warm water (under 40ºC).

3. Cheat sheet

Washing your sheets regularly is a must (if you prefer to do laundry less regularly, we recommend having another set of sheets so you can at least change them weekly). To make it easy for you, we’ve made a cheat sheet for when you need to wash each item of your bedding.

  • Sheets
    • Wash every week. Wash more often (3–4 days) if your pets share your bed.
  • Quilt Covers:
    • Wash every fortnight to a month
  • Pillowcases
    • Wash every week

4. Keep it clean

Take care not to use any harsh chemicals that can damage the delicate fabric such as bleach, or fabric softener. If you use too much fabric softener, this will leave a soapy residue on your sheets, attracting dirt and making your sheets feel a bit slimy. Bleach can cause whites to yellow over time, weaken fabric fibres and ruin trims and embroidery.

If your sheets are stained, try dabbing the fabric with cold water mixed with a sprinkle of baking soda.

5. High and dry

Air drying your sheets is the best thing under the sun. Tumble drying can damage the fabric and should be avoided. It’s best to let them dry naturally in the shade.

So, if it’s been more than a week (a fortnight? A MONTH??) since you last washed your sheets, you’re probably itching to do a load of washing and now you have our handy guide on how to do it best. Happy washing and sweet dreams.
