6 Ways to Cool Down If You’re a Hot Sleeper

Do you often wake up feeling hot and uncomfortable? Chances are, you’re a hot sleeper. This can be because of your metabolism, your hormones or the weather. Whatever the cause, being a hot sleeper can stop you from getting a good night’s rest. Luckily, there are a number of simple things you can do to keep your cool while you sleep.

1. Keep your bedroom cool

Studies claim that the ideal room temperature for sleep is between 15.6 and 19.4°C. In the hotter months, try reducing the temperature of your room with an air conditioner or a fan.

2. Turn off your gadgets

Electronic screens emit blue light that can decrease your melatonin, hormones that prepare your body for sleep. Keeping your gadgets on at night is a big no no, they will only increase the temperature in your room.

3. Take a shower before sleeping

Avoid going to bed feeling hot and sweaty. Try taking a quick, cold shower before bed to cool your body temperature in time for sleep. If you’re feeling extra warm, you could also try pressing ice cubes against your wrists and neck.

4. Drink a glass of cold water

If you drink a glass of water before sleep, it’ll help you stay hydrated and regulate your body temperature. It’s also good to have a glass of water on your bedside, just in case you wake up feeling hot and dry in the middle of the night.

5. Wear light or loose clothing

Try thin, loose-fitting cotton pajamas that allow air to circulate between the fabric and your body. And if you’re brave, why not try sleeping in your birthday suit?

6. Use high-quality and cool bedding

Look for lightweight bed linen designed for summer months like a quilt with low to medium warmth ratings or a cotton blanket. Creating an optimal sleep environment is critical to help you keep your cool all night long.
