Wondering how to stop your bath towels from shedding and ruining the relationship?

When towels are new, they may have excess fibres from the factory that cause lint to appear when you wash or use them. To fix this, simply:

  1. Shake your towels out vigorously to remove any loose lint.
  2. If you have a dryer, ensure the lint trap is completely clean. Once this is done, pop in the towels and set a cycle on the lowest heat setting. If you don’t have a dryer, go straight to step 4. (High settings can set the towel coating in place when what we want is to dissolve it.)
  3. Remove your towels from the dryer and reshake them.
  4. Pop the towels in the washer, alone, with either ½ a cup of bicarb soda or vinegar, along with the recommended amount of detergent. Put the wash cycle on hot. (The bicarb soda or vinegar paired with the hot water will break down the excess lint.)
  5. Remove the towels from the washer and reshake them.
  6. Dry your towels on a high heat setting in the dryer (removing any lint in the lint trap first) or dry them naturally in the sun.
  7. You will have fluffy towels sans lint!

4. How to make bath towels fluffy again

Want to rekindle the relationship with your towels? Simply:

  1. Pop a tennis ball (preferably not one your pupperino has been drooling all over) into the dryer with your towels. As the ball bounces, it removes lumps from your towels, restoring their youth, beauty and softness.
  2. Give them the Marcia Brady treatment and brush your towels (make sure to do this when they're dry). This will break down any detergent residue and will separate the towel threads to make these beauties softer and thicker.
  3. Don’t use fabric softener, as these chemicals can rob your towels of their absorbency. Instead, wash them with a cup of vinegar (and no detergent) every now and then.

6. What is the difference between a bath towel and a bath sheet?

Wondering which is the one for you?

As the name suggests, bath sheets are bigger than bath towels. This means they offer more absorbency as they have more material to dry you off.

Depending on the type of towel or bath sheet you choose, the size can vary, but roughly speaking, the dimensions for both are below:

  • Bath towels are 69cm x 137cm
  • Bath sheets are 90cm x 160cm.

7. What is the difference between beach towels and bath towels?

Beach towels have a dual purpose; since the sun will naturally dry you when you’re done splashing about in the waves, beach towels are slightly less absorbent than bath towels. This means they can dry off quicker in the sun, so they’re not sopping wet when you get back into your car.

Good beach towels will also be sand-resistant (often with a velour side) and will be bigger than bath towels, so you’ll have a dream beach blanket for all your sunbaking needs.

Beach Towels also come in a wide range designs that are bolder and more playful than their bathroom cousins. This lets you share your creative flare at the beach.

8. How often should you replace bath towels?

Your relationship with your Canningvale towels should last at least two years. After this they lose their absorbency and retain bacteria, making it the perfect time to part amicably.

9. Are bath towels recyclable?

If you’re ready to part ways with your towels, you can donate them to your local animal shelter.

But make sure you check in with your charity of choice BEFORE you drop them off! Charities spend a tonne of money each year sorting through unwanted donations and disposing of them and this is time and money that could be better spent elsewhere.
