5 Tips to Make a Small Bedroom Feel Bigger
3rd Aug 2023
When it comes to creating a cosy haven, styling a smaller space can be both a bonus and a challenge. While it’s true that a well-designed small room can require less furniture, or fewer expenses and still radiate warmth and comfort, we often find ourselves guilty of cramming things in wherever they fit, leaving little room to breathe. But fear not, because we’ve got you covered with our expert tips on transforming your tiny room into a swoon-worthy space that you can’t wait to retire to at the end of the day. Here are our top tips for making the most of every inch.
1. Declutter and conquer
In the battle against a cramped bedroom, decluttering is the first weapon in your arsenal. Channel your inner Marie Kondo and get rid of anything that doesn’t spark joy or serve a purpose. Clear the clutter from your surfaces, choose multi-functional furniture and get creative with your storage solutions.
By keeping things simple and focusing only on what you need, you not only open up the space (so is perfect for making smaller rooms appear larger) you can be really creative with the way you style a space.
Invest in under-bed storage containers or bins to utilise the valuable space beneath your bed, and consider installing wall-mounted shelves or floating bookcases to maximise vertical space. Additionally, use bedside wall pockets or hanging organisers to keep essentials within reach, and don't overlook the potential of the back of your bedroom door by installing over-the-door organisers. When you free up physical space, you create mental space and a more open and inviting atmosphere.

2. Play with light and colour
Lighting and colour have the power to transform your small bedroom’s vibe. Eg. Light or bright walls create a sense of airiness and openness, making the space feel more expansive. Light and bright doesn't always mean white. While dark colours will make a space feel cramped, if you find white too plain you can use other neutrals. These are simply colours that feel understated, and create a sense of calm, balance and harmony, while fitting in seamlessly with the rest of your decor.
When it comes to bed linen, ever wonder why so many hotels use white bedding? If you want to create the illusion of space, white bedding is your secret weapon. This timeless and classic choice reflects light, making your room appear brighter and more open. You’ll be amazed at how quickly this one simple tip can instantly open up a space!
And don't forget about lighting! Brighten up your space with a combination of natural and artificial light sources. Add task lighting for reading nooks or create a dreamy ambience with string lights. No one likes fluorescents. They're bad for your eyes and they draw harsh attention to how cramped smaller spaces can be.
Try using dimmer lightbulbs in your overhead lights, and pop some extra lamps or sconces around the space to create a calm and cosy atmosphere. Candles also help create a soothing and serene mood.

When space is at a premium, it’s time to get smart with your furniture choices. Consider investing in pieces that serve multiple purposes, like a bed with built-in storage, or a desk that doubles as a dressing table (or folds away when not in use).
Opt for furniture with legs instead of solid bases to create the illusion of openness and space. Furniture that allows light to pass through, like a glass or acrylic bedside table can also contribute to the visual spaciousness of your room.
4. The magic of textiles and accessories
When it comes to maximising your small bedroom’s potential, don’t underestimate the power of bedding and accessories. Opt for lightweight fabrics like linen or cotton to create an airy feel and choose a neutral colour palette for a spacious look.
Fool the eye by adding depth with textured throws, cushions and other homewares, but remember not to go overboard to avoid clutter. Adding cushions to a bed or couch in a range of styles and textures helps the statement piece like the bed or couch feel fuller, so you can pare back your other accessories and have more room to move. Keep to similar colours to keep from overwhelming the senses.

5. Mirror mirror on the wall

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the roomiest of them all? Mirrors, my friends, are like windows into another dimension - they magically expand the perceived space in your small bedroom. Strategically place mirrors to reflect light and create the illusion of depth. A large mirror on one wall (bonus points if you add a lamp in front of a mirror, as the light will bounce back and create the illusion of more space), or a collection of smaller mirrors can do wonders.
And don't forget about the power of artwork! Opt for pieces with depth and perspective, like landscapes or abstract art with vanishing points, to further enhance the illusion of space and add visual interest to your bedroom sanctuary. Artworks that are taller than they are wide can also give the illusion of space by drawing the eye up and emphasising the third dimension of your room.
